Carpentry

Doors & hardware

  • Adjusting/rehanging doors that rub or won’t latch
  • Tightening/replacing hinges, closers, latches, handles, and strike plates
  • Replacing worn door stops and thresholds
  • Fire-door checks: seals, closers, glazing beads, signage (and fixing defects)

Locks & access

  • Repairing/realigning locksets and euro cylinders
  • Installing/replacing door viewers, kick plates, finger guards
  • Fitting keypad/mag-lock keeper plates and timber packers

Furniture & built-ins

  • Tightening/repairing desks, tables, meeting-room credenzas
  • Fixing wobbly legs, re-gluing joints, replacing cam locks/confirmat screws
  • Adjusting cabinet doors/drawer runners; replacing worn hinges and catches
  • Building/altering tea-point units, plinths, worktops (including edging repairs)

Partitions & trims

  • Repairing timber/glazed partition beads and skirting boards (baseboards)
  • Re-fixing loose trims, architraves, window boards, stair nosings
  • Patching small timber sections damaged by chairs/cleaning

Shelving & storage

  • Installing new shelving, wall rails, and brackets
  • Re-anchoring overloaded shelves to studs/solid fixings
  • Making bespoke dividers, printer stands, AV cabinetry tweaks

Ceilings & access panels (light carpentry)

  • Replacing damaged ceiling grid trims/timber access hatches
  • Easing/repairing loft or riser hatches and their stays

Floors & thresholds

  • Re-fixing timber thresholds/ramps; trimming doors after carpet/LPV changes
  • Repairing squeaks in raised timber sections/steps

Acoustic & safety extras

  • Installing acoustic baffles/panels on timber frames
  • Fitting handrails, wall guards, corner guards, noticeboards, whiteboards
  • Ensuring gaps/seals meet fire and accessibility requirements

Preventive checks (quick routine)

  • Door operation: latch, closer speed, clearance at head/threshold
  • Hardware tightness: handles, hinges, kick plates
  • Built-in joinery: hinge screws biting, drawer runners smooth
  • Fixings: shelves and wall-hung units still solid and level
  • Fire doors: intumescent/smoke seals intact, closer self-closing reliably

Safety checks

  • PPE: safety shoes, eye/ear protection, gloves; dust masks/respirators for cutting/sanding
  • Permits & docs: RAMS on site; hot-works permit if grinding/cutting metal; asbestos awareness (check survey before drilling)
  • Isolation: lock-off power on sit/stand desks, auto doors, mag-locks; confirm circuits are dead before cutting near cables
  • Fire integrity: don’t compromise fire-stopping; reinstate seals/closers; keep escape routes clear; no storing waste in risers
  • Working at height: inspect ladders/steps; use spotter/tool tethers; no overreaching; edge protection where needed
  • Manual handling: team lifts for heavy tops/doors; use dollies/suction cups; plan routes and clear obstacles
  • Occupied area controls: barriers/signage, cord covers, dust control (extract/HEPA), noise timing; tidy as you go
  • Tools & leads: PAT-tested, guards in place, sharp bits/blades only; inspect leads, use RCDs
  • Chemicals & dust: follow COSHH; ventilate adhesives/sealants; manage wood dust cleanup (no dry sweeping)
  • Glazing & sharp edges: tape/protect edges; store glass upright; use proper gloves
  • Post-work check: remove offcuts/fasteners, vacuum area, test door operation/closers, verify access control, update snag list

When to call a specialist

  • Fire-door certification/major repairs
  • Structural partitions or load-bearing elements
  • Large joinery manufacture (reception desks, bespoke storage)
  • Works that interface with access control, alarms, or glass

Door installation (new/replacement)

  • Survey opening and frame; confirm handing and floor/threshold height
  • Set frame plumb/level with packers; fix at hinge/lock points
  • Hang leaf with correct clearances; check for rubs
  • Fit hardware: hinges, latch/lock, handles, closer, stops
  • Install intumescent/smoke/acoustic seals as specified
  • Finish edges/cut faces; touch-up paint/veneer; verify signage
  • QA: latches cleanly, closer speed/latching set, gaps per spec

Furniture assembly (new installs)

  • Plan layout; stage components; verify hardware packs
  • Build sub-assemblies; square and level; tighten cams/confirmats evenly
  • Align doors/drawers; adjust hinges/runners; fit pulls/bumper stops
  • Install cable management (grommets/trays/clips); label circuits
  • Handover: wipe down; leave spares and simple O&M notes

Furniture disassembly (moves/clear-outs)

  • Photograph and tag items; protect finishes
  • Bag and label all hardware per unit; include specialty tools
  • Reverse build sequence; keep sub-assemblies intact where possible
  • Pack flat with corner guards; use skates/dollies; segregate waste/recycling
  • Safety: manual handling plan; isolate power on sit/stand desks
